Voluntary Action Swindon was
formed in 1932 as the Swindon Council for Social Services, administering
help to the unemployed and disadvantaged. In the 75 years of its
existence, the organisation has been at the forefront of social and
community action and support in Swindon. In 1997, when the Swindon
Borough Council changed to a unitary authority, the name was changed to
Voluntary Action Swindon.
Voluntary Action Swindon has a unique role serving as a mediator between
the public sector and the voluntary and community sector. Voluntary
Action Swindon contributes significantly in bringing the diverse sectors
of our community together, promoting the wider engagement and
participation of the voluntary and community sector in the Swindon
Strategic Partnership and Local Area Agreement.
Voluntary Action Swindon is the local Council for Voluntary Service
(CVS) in Swindon. The value of a CVS is its ability to listen and
respond to meet local community needs and be proactive. As an
infrastructure organisation, Voluntary Action Swindon offers capacity
building support to voluntary and community organisations; represents
their interests and provides a voice for them in policy-making. All
voluntary and community organisations in the Borough of Swindon are our
target groups, with priority given to those working with the socially
disadvantaged and isolated. Voluntary Action Swindon is now an official
umbrella body of the Criminal Records Bureau and can therefore offer the
service of
CRB checking.
Voluntary Action Swindon has a Trustee Board elected by our members. We
have over 340 members who are made up of, and accountable to, a wide
range of voluntary and community organisations. The offices on the
ground floor and first floor are fully accessible for disabled people.
